How Landlords Can Apply for California's Rent Relief Program

California has dedicated $5.2 billion in federal funding for pandemic rent relief programs that cover 100% of back-rent dating back to April 1, 2020, and upcoming rent too for eligible tenants within certain income limits. These programs will continue well past the expiration of the state's eviction moratorium on Sept. 30, 2021, and applying for the funding could help stave off eviction.
Landlords who participate in the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program can get reimbursed for an eligible renter's unpaid rent dating back to April 1, 2020.
The renter's household must be income-eligible, which will be verified by the state. All payments must be used to satisfy the renter's unpaid rent. Renters must verify their eligibility and sign the application.
Landlords and Renters must complete an application for reimbursement via the California Housing website. They should have these documents on hand:
  • Lease or rental agreement that shows the renter’s name, address, and monthly rent.
  • Rent statement showing a balance of unpaid rent from April 1, 2020
  • W-9
